i just start playing ansalonMUD and this is my first time playing a MUD i know abosolutly nothing about MUDs.

I downloaded MUSHclient and was wondering if the plugins that are shown for Aardwolf will work in any MUD?

In the YouTube video made for MUSHclient they show many different plugins that are used to play Aardwolf are these usuable on any MUD, specifically AnsalonMUD

No, unfortunately. At least, they would need modification.

The reason is, that these plugins work by detecting the stuff the MUD sends down, and then interpreting it. In particular, things like your current health and mana are picked up by "triggers" which react to a line like this:

<20hp 100m 100mv>

In that example we have 20 health, 100 mana and 100 movement points. And that line doesn't even show our experience.

Now some MUDs might show:

20 hp, 100 m, 100 mv, 400 exp-

That would need a different trigger (no < and > symbol, a space after the numbers, etc.)

You can usually customize prompts, and in fact for something like the health bar plugin to work we need to know the maxima, so you might change your prompt to read:

<20/40hp 100/200m 100/100mv 5000/6000xp>

Now with that extra information we can see we have 50% health, etc.

We can probably help with something like the experience bar plugin, or the health bar plugin, if you copy and paste your exact prompt from AnsalonMUD. Also investigate if you can find the maximum (eg. 20/40 health, rather than just 20 health), so the plugin knows how healthy you are.

Depending on what the MUD itself supplies, it can be anywhere from a breeze to a seriously major project to create a map. For example, in Achaea, there is a MAP command which shows a configurable-size text map. All an Achaean plugin developer need do is copy that into a miniwindow. On the other hand, if you play a MUD that has no such facility, you might have to create your own database of rooms/exits, and write the code to draw the map yourself, which is quite a bit harder.

That said, I wrote my own zone-maps (in Notepad) before Achaea added MAP, which helped me personally a lot.

Example: (# = land room, % = water)
-#
 |\ \
 | \ %-
 |  \ \
-#---#-%
      \ \

'Soludra' on Achaea
