I am trying to play a MUD via MUSHClient (discworld - the URL is http://discworld.imaginary.com). I try to connect on MUSHClient via port 4242 / 23, which it runs on, and it doesn't connect. It gets 'Operation Timed Out'. Also, i now cannot get onto the Discworld homepage, though all other websites work fine. Can anyone help? Please?

Is it possible that the sever was just down when you attempted to connect?

I apologize for asking this question, but you never know.
Are you entering 4242 / 23 as the port ?

If so try to enter one port number.

For Example:

Mud Name: Discworld
Mud Addy: discworld.imaginary.com
Port: 23
Or

Mud Name: Discworld
Mud Addy: discworld.imaginary.com
Port: 4242
But..
If you are saying that the homepage stopped working,
chances are that their server went down for a few.
I treadi to connect myself and got a message that
it would be shutting down in 2 minutes.

No, because all of my friends can get on fine (Btw, that means that the game is rebooting). Its very annoying, because i doing well in the game atm!
Also, i usually use just port 4242, or port 23, i never use the '/'.

It looks as if somewhere between you and the server there is somethign down. In this case there shouldn't be a problem with the game server, your ISP, or your Box. Somewhere there is a computer between the game server and you that has a problem. TO fix this you could either go through a proxy or just wait it out.

I would start with www.google.com and a search on proxies.
I am sure that you will get a lot of returns heh, you you might be able to narrow it down.

you could try searching for "Proxy Servers"

If the MUD is down, and their homepage, but nothing else, sounds a lot like their PC is down for some reason. Maybe take a day to fix it they are replacing a hard disk or cleaning out a virus.

I am planning to add proxy server support to MUSHclient, however I don't think that will help if the MUD is down, in fact I am certain of it.

Well, the thing is that all of my friends can get onto the URL, and as someone else said, there is probably a problem between me and their server. I emailed the ISP and they didn't really help a lot, but i am going to see if using a proxy server works any better.
Thanks for the help

Is there a firewall between you and the MUD? For instance, if you are at a school, college, workplace etc? They may block attempts to connect out on port 23.

You could try using a networking tool called a "traceroute" to see where your connectivity is being disrupted. One program, installed with Windows networking is 'tracert'. Open a DOS\Command box, and type:

tracert discworld.imaginary.com

Alternatively, you could get a fancier program with prettier results. A good free one can be found here:

http://www.samspade.org/

You can also use their webform to perform a traceroute from their site, however, note that the results are of a traceroute from the WEBSITE to the DESTINATION, -- NOT -- from your computer to the destination. (Which is why I recommend the software).

Viewing the results, you should be able to determine where your connection is being disrupted, by the host names of the servers.

Here is a sample, from my computer:

Traceroute uses ICMP packets which may (or may not) get through a firewall, whilst attempts to use TCP on port 23 may (or may not) get through the same firewall. Whilst it is a good idea, the results may be inconclusive.

Doh! ...and I just posted about ICMP packets in another thread. Shame on me. LOL.

Well Eviscerator, if the traceroute information shows a connection all the way to the server, but you still can't connect with MUSHclient, then you may consider a firewall as a possible cause of your problems. (Because that particular port number is blocked). Indeed, if you are sure other people can connect, and you can't, you can pretty much be sure that is the reason, well, assuming of course you have MUSHclient configured correctly too - and are absolutely positive of that.

Answer Nick's question about where you are connecting from, it'll be a clue.

Possibile causes:
1. mud is down. check mudconnector.com, they have a nice feature, about checking connection.
2. you are playn' from a public place or school/work, and your "beloved" network admin has closed the ports you need
Soltutions:
1. just wait (sorry)
2. use a port redirect from a ssh or a proxy server. connect to that adress like you connect on the mud. after connecting to the ssh/proxy type
connect discworld.imaginary.com 4242

PS Maybe Nick should thing at providing some SSH for those unforunate players who want to play mud from work or school :)
Rjak

PS Sorry for my bad english.
