I'm new to SMAUG and Area Editor. I'd like to make my own MUD someday. I have some knowledge of C++. Ok, here's my question. I make a new area with Area Editor, I save it in my smaug area folder, edit the area.lst, but my character never starts in my new area when I log on. Whats going on? Second, I did the command "sset Darkforge sprun 100" -quotes, it says it set my skill, but when I type in "skill" or "skills" the command line say "Huh?". Is there something I didn't do right? If you can help, i'd really appriciate it.

Both of those questions are answered at the FAQ for the SMAUG server

See "Common wizard commands" for the question about setting skills.
