Using MUSH Proxies, Hiding IP addresses

Hi,

I hope somebody can help an inexperienced MUSH-er with some questions.

I'd like to obscure the IP address I'm connecting from, from MUSHes I connect to. I've been told I can do this with a "proxy" and that MUSHclient has proxy support.

I am clueless, and if someone could point me to a tutorial or even FAQ on the subject, it would be a help.

My main questions: How do you set up a proxy that will function as an intermediary between the MUSH and your computer to conceal your IP?

Do said proxies generally cost anything for use, and in the case of those that are free (I assume -some- must be for-pay, I'm seeing this as a case of remote servers), are they way too slow for functionality?

Do I need supporting software?

...in fact, I might as well ask for it step-by-step. Any advice I can get would help.

Just go to the "IP address" part of the configuration menu (alt-1) and there is a proxy section there. You just have to select the type of proxy server, the address, the port, and if neccessary, the login info for the proxy.


There are both pay and free servers. The speed will have very little effect on a mud, since the lag is minimal with a proxy. The main issue with free proxies is that a lot of muds have them blocked. The one I play on most frequently has a list of free proxies on the siteban list to stop multiplaying. Pay servers are most likely not blocked, but have the drawback of costing money.


MUSHclient supports proxies all by itself, as do most web browsers out there.

For a list of free proxy servers, check proxguru.com or proxy4free.com. I'm not sure where to get a list of pay servers, but I'm sure they're out there. You might want to get in touch with your isp and see if they have a solution that will be anonymous enough for your needs.
