How do you create dat files? Do you have to just create them from scratch, or is there something you copy and paste etc?

You can create them with a text editor, such as Notepad, however all of the ones you need are part of the SMAUG download. This is why they aren't supplied with the Area Editor, as they may get out of date, or be different from, the ones you use for your own MUD.
Thus you should find commands.dat, skills.dat, socials.dat and so on, in the "system" directory of your SMAUG download.
