There is a number in mud.h that specifies the starting vnum. Don't remember what it's called, but what you can do is, as an immortal, go to the starting room and get its vnum, then look that up in mud.h. After changing that, recompile the code. (If you don't know how to do that, Nick has a number of guides on this site.)

The greeting can be edited like any help entry. For instance, 'hedit greeting'. Then you save the help file. Nick recently put up all the help files on this site: http://www.gammon.com.au/forum/?wiki=index
