| Hello,
Recently I downloaded the SMAUG server and was going to run it to try and check out my areas I had built with a offline area editor. The past two days though every time I start it up it runs fine but when I try to connect to it, my whole system locks up.
My mud client will say
Connected to localhost
and then lock up.
or it will say connect to (whatever my ip is at the time)
and still lock up.
I was wondering if anyone knew a way to fix this or had some suggestions. Would really appreciate it. | Top |

| i would wait for nick on this, but from what i know
you would have to physically add into the mud before
actually putting it into the area directory...
i had an old area i had made and it wouldn't work
until i created a new file of it with the online one
and then copy the one you made onto the newly created
one... then again it could be some other problem, but
mine worked fine after doing that.

| A while ago there were problems with SMAUG crashing (or locking up) because of bad data in the area files. For instance, if you have more races than the program allows for internally then its memory can become corrupted.
I would try a couple of things.
1. Check out the area(s) with the Area Editor's "area check" which will do an offline consistency check.
2. Try adding the (new) areas into the area.lst file one by one until you find the problem area.
Some of the things SMAUG does are not performed until you connect, so it will start up OK, but then crash as soon as the first person connects. |

| Well, I had taken the area out, deleted the whole smaug server, redownloaded, and reinstalled.
I made no changes to it, but it still crashed on the connect. | Top |

| I would try stopping it connecting to an "ident" server and seeing if that helps ...
You do this by editing the file:
system\sysdata.dat
and changing the line (near the end) with "IdentTries" in it to read:
IdentTries 0
****
In other words, change the line in the file system\sysdata.dat, that currently reads
IdentTries 20
to
IdentTries 0

| Well I did that, and when I reconnected it was nice, the log in screen came up. In my joy I switched back over here to tell you how thankful I was and that you were a genius. But, as soon as I clicked on reply to this subject in my browser
*BOOM*
everything halted and I knew my system had locked again.
So I was still happy and figured that I just can't use my browser while I run the server. I restarted, didn't connect to the net, restarted the smaug, made sure IdentTries was set to 0, and reconnected only for the same problem of it locking up on connect to happen again.
I deleted the server, reinstalled it, and set identTries to 0 again, and still my problem is haunting me again. | Top |

| This is a tricky problem. :)
The thing is, I never get a crash with SMAUG, however I do get messages from time-to-time about your exact problem.
Try two more things ...
1. Change Nameresolving in the system.dat file to 0, like this:
Nameresolving 0
2. If you have NetBeui enabled as a network protocol, and have no particular reason for doing so, uninstall it, reboot Windows, and try again. The only protocol you normally need for the Internet is TCP/IP.
Let us know how these ideas go.

| Well it all seemed real good, I edited that stuff, logged on as lordrom, was going to log a second person named zylan, to go ahead and wiz. But when the second person connected it locked. I restarted the comp, restarted the server, figured I'd just use lordrom, but then when I connected it locked again.
Kind of sucks that if it locks up there becomes a new problem. Sorry for this problem bein so long btw. | Top |

| Right-click on Network Neighourhood, select Properties, and then under Configuration if you see NetBeui click on it, and then click Remove.
However if you aren't sure what you are doing, it might be wise to get a friend around who knows about networking.
I don't want to be blamed if your PC stops working. :)
At least, you can report back about whether or not you see NetBeui in the list, before you start removing anything. |

| Hmmm - I'm not sure what to recommend now. As I said, I run SMAUG for hours here and it never crashes, so I can't fire up the debugger and find what is wrong, because nothing is, here.
However you aren't the first to have such problems. It is obviously something environmental, maybe your area files, maybe your version of Windows, maybe something else running.
Have you tried connecting, not with an existing character (eg. Lordrom) but just as a new character?
Have you added anything new to it, other than the downloaded files? eg. a new class, race, area, player file? |

| Well,
The one we have been trying to fix the only things I have changed is the sysdata where you told me. Otherwise no area files nothing, its a fresh copy. | Top |

| I don't know what more to suggest.
If anyone else knows the answer I would be glad to hear from them. As I say, it works here, and judging by the other questions about how to get shops and things to work, it also works for others.
However, if you have a fresh download, then you are using the same code everyone else is.
One idea would be to install Cygwin, download the source, and recompile (see other messages on this forum about doing this).
Maybe a recompiled version would work better. Maybe not. :) |
