Ok, a number of questions, I'll start from the top:
1) how can I change the name of my server? Everything I've tried doesn't work, the name stays at "Realms of Despair" or whatever the default is
2) how can I get rid of all the default areas and make my own? It seems as soon as I get rid of the default ones it has, the server program will not run.

do I have to compile a server, or can I just change some of the files on the ready-to-go server download?

I think I might have solved my area problem, however now I need to know if there is a way to change the default start area so that I can use my own starting areas.

Oh yeah, one last thing, on the area editor, what are the fields in the Ranges section for?
Is it just the reccomended levels? It's confusing me because there's a soft low/high and hard low/high.

That was question 23 in the FAQ. It depends where you mean however. There is also a help topic GREETING in the help.are file. Try changing that.

Soft is recommended, hard is enforced.
