Need help with Arduino-compatible minimal board

Hi,

I apologize if I'm posting my question in the wrong place but I couldn't find a way to post my question under the microcontrollers forum and no way to contact Nick directly.

I am trying to follow the instructions on the Arduino compatible minimal board page(http://www.gammon.com.au/forum/?id=11637), starting with detecting the microcontroller type but have had zero success. I only get the "Atmega chip detector." message. I triple checked all connections and also tried the detection with a vanilla ATmega328P chip as well as with a verified to be working ATmega328P chip that has the Arduino bootloader preloaded. I'm using the Arduino Uno board for running the sketch.

Is there any troubleshooting guide or any hint that anyone can provide to help me understand why I'm not getting anything back? It looks like the programAcknowledge response is never received.

I suggest you post a photo (on the Arduino forum) of your wiring. I have used that sketch and wiring hundreds of times with different chips. It definitely works.

Possibly you don't have a clock, depending on the fuse settings. There is mention in my thread about connecting an extra wire to provide a clock signal.
