INSTALL MUSHCLIENT

How to install the beta-test version of MUSHclient.

Thursday, 25 May 2000

BACK-UP!

You are strongly advised to back-up:

1. Your existing version of MUSHclient (ie. mushclient.exe)
2. Your existing world files (ie. *.MCL)

The world files written by MUSHclient 2.16 are *not* backwards-compatible with earlier versions due to their additional features. Also, if MUSHclient itself does not work properly you may want to revert to the earlier version.

Here is one way of backing up...

1. Start a "command" window
2. Navigate to your MUSHclient directory (eg. CD c:\mushclient)
3. Make a backup directory (eg. MKDIR backup)
4. Copy the relevant files to the backup directory:
    COPY MUSHCLIENT.EXE backup
    COPY *.MCL backup
d:\
Alternatively you could do a similar thing by dragging and dropping with the Windows Explorer. (Ctrl+Drag to make a copy of files).

DOWNLOAD

Four files will be provided for downloading...

1. mushclient2162.zip (276 Kb) <--- current version (in this case mushclient version 2.16.2)
2. dlls.zip (675 Kb) <--- some Windows DLLs: only download this if necessary, see below
3. spell.zip (289 Kb) <--- files needed by spell checker, and zlib.dll for compressions: only download this once.
4. british_dict.zip (177 Kb) <--- British dictionary for spell checker

The *first* time you install MUSHclient 2.16 you should download:

mushclient2162.zip
spell.zip
british_dict.zip (optional for British spelling)

You do *not* need to download spell.zip again - this is the DLL and dictionaries for the spell checker. They are supplied by a third party and will not change. Also in spell.zip is a DLL for decompressing data from a compressed MUD (zlib.dll). This will also not change.

Only download dlls.zip if you get error messages when attempting to start MUSHclient. Most modern Windows installations will already have these DLLs installed.

If you prefer British to American spelling for the spell checker *also* download british_dict.zip and unzip the contents into the "spell" subdirectory.

INSTALL

After downloading mushclient2162.zip and spell.zip, you should unzip them both into your MUSHclient directory (eg. c:\mushclient). Make sure you have "use folder names" checked when using WinZip. It is necessary that the spell check dictionaries are placed in a "spell" subfolder.

If you need to download dlls.zip then also unzip this into your MUSHclient directory.

Thus, your MUSHclient directory should look like this:

mushclient.exe	- MUSHclient program
readme.txt - details of changes
regularexpressions.txt - how to use regular expressions

ssce5232.dll - spell checker version 5.2, 32bit
zlib.dll	- zLib compression library for Mud Client Compression Protocol

comdlg32.dll (optional - Windows common dialogs)
mfc42.dll (optional - MFC library)
msvcrt.dll (optional - Windows C runtime library)

spell\accent.tlx - English words containing non-ASCII characters (eg. "couldn't")
spell\correct.tlx - "Auto Correct" dictionary
spell\ssce.hlp - Help file for spell checker
spell\ssceam.tlx - American English dictionary
spell\ssceam2.clx - American English dictionary part 2
spell\userdic.tlx - User dictionary

spell\sscebr.tlx (optional - British English dictionary)
spell\sscebr2.clx (optional - British English dictionary part 2)

TEST

You should now be able to start mushclient.exe and see MUSHclient version 2.16 start up. You can open your existing world files, they will be converted to support the new features (however the changes are not saved until you save them using the "Save" command).

Please read readme.txt for details about the changes in version 2.16.
